Our project is a melange between the beliefs and superstitions both of our cultures have about sleep, dreams, the afterlife and the spirits of the dead. We find that our cultures, Mexican and Kazakh, share some similarities in the way we honour the dead and the way our cultures connect the act of sleeping with the realm of the dead. We also wanted to explore the idea of sleep being a brief death – our bodies are motionless and vulnerable, our minds travelling to a different state of consciousness. We dream, but we don’t always remember our dreams. We are also completely oblivious to what is going on around us while we are asleep.
